Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Steel Dynamics' (SDI) Texas steel mill is expected to restart in the next few days from an unplanned outage.

The outage will cost the company between 50,000-70,000st of shipments, chief financial officer Theresa Wagler said.

SDI's chief executive Mark Millett said the mill should restart "in the next few days" on an earnings call today.

The 3mn short tons (st)/yr flat rolled steel mill's hot mill went down on 1 July when its caster shear equipment had issues that caused the company to idle its EAF. The cost of the repair was reported at the time to be less than $1mn.

Once started, it should ramp up "to 80pc by the end of the year," Millett added.

Millett previously had said the mill would run at 80pc capacity total for all of 2023, which has now been revised downward to the mill reaching 80pc capacity utilization by the end of the year.

The Sinton mill continues to run at lower rates, with SDI saying that in the second quarter the mill ran near the 56pc utilization rate recorded in the first quarter.

The company expects Sinton to reach 100pc of capacity quickly in 2024.

The mill started the year with supply issues related to parts for rolling equipment that were resolved by the end of the first quarter.

SDI's steel mills excluding Sinton ran at 93pc utilization rates in the second quarter, down by 2 percentage points from the prior year and 1 percentage point from the prior quarter.

Millett said Sinton ran at 52pc in the second quarter and produced 390,000st of steel, down from the 420,000st produced in the prior quarter. A portion of the lack of utilization was the mill running on a single EAF during a portion of the quarter, but Millett did not elaborate why that happened.
