China's January-June copper concentrate imports rose by 7.2pc from a year earlier, driven by increased demand from a smelter expansion and two smelters' returning production.

Imports hit 13.4mn t, up from 12.5mn t in January-June 2022, customs data show.

Daye Non-Ferrous' 400,000 t/yr copper smelter started consumption of copper concentrate in late October 2022, while production increased and smelters returned at Dongying Fangyuan and Xiangguang Copper in east China's Shandong province in the third quarter and late second quarter of 2022 respectively.

Imports from Chile — the world's largest copper concentrate producer — totalled 4.12mn t during January-June, down by 4pc from 4.29mn t a year earlier. Receipts from Peru, the second-largest supplier, rose to 3.37mn t from 3.09mn t for the same period.

Imports from Chile and Peru accounted for 55.6pc of overall receipts during January-June, down from 59pc a year earlier. Receipts from Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Mexico accounted for 5.4pc, 6.1pc and 5pc respectively during January-June against 5.2pc, 6pc and 4.3pc the previous year.

The Argus weekly index for smelter purchases was assessed at $92.50/t and 9.25¢/lb on 28 July, unchanged since 14 July because of limited spot deals. The index for trader purchases remained unchanged at $81/t and 8.1¢/lb over the same period.
