India’s KIOCL halts pellet output at Mangalore plant

Indian state-controlled iron ore pellet producer KIOCL has stopped production at its 3.5mn t/yr pellet plant in Mangalore owing to unavailability of iron ore fines.

The plant was shut down on 5 August, the producer said, without providing a tentative restart date.

KIOCL mostly gets raw material from the country's largest iron ore producer NMDC's Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh state and also sources from other domestic and overseas supplies.

The producer received a mining lease grant from the Karnataka state government early this year for iron ore and manganese ore mining in the Devadari range in Ballari district that is expected to reduce its dependability of sourcing the raw material from other producers. The mine has total mineable reserves of about 7.3mn t with an average Fe content of 58.04pc, according to a pre-feasibility report, but production has yet to begin.

KIOCL had shut down its Mangalore plant twice in the last four months for maintenance.

KIOCL produced 2.03mn t of pellets in the April 2021-March 2022 fiscal year. It sold 2.07mn t, with exports accounting for 98pc.
