Cepsa to supply biodiesel for maritime transport

  • Market: Biofuels
  • 09/08/23

Spanish oil and gas company Cepsa unveiled plans to supply renewable diesel to shipping company Naviera Armas Trasmediterranea (NAT).

Cepsa will initially provide 100t of biodiesel to cover 84 voyages that NAT will conduct this month between the Port of Algeciras and Ceuta. Such supply is expected to avoid 63t of CO2 emissions, Cepsa said.

The biodiesel will be manufactured at Cepsa's plant in San Roque Energy Park in Cadiz, which was recently converted to co-process biofuels from agricultural waste.

Cepsa is already active in supplying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), while a 750,000 t/yr green ammonia plant at the company's Algeciras site is expected to become operational in 2027. Cepsa has also announced partnerships to produce biofuel feedstocks from agricultural and livestock waste and microalgae.

As part of its 2030 strategy, Cepsa plans to reach 2.5mn t/yr of biofuel production and 2GW of electrolysis capacity.

Under the EU's recently-adopted FuelEU maritime initiative part of the ‘Fit for 55' package, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity in maritime transport must be reduced by 2pc in 2025, 6pc in 2030 and by 80pc in 2050.
