Strikes hit Chevron Australia LNG operations: Update

Adds details of fault at Wheatstone

An unspecified fault has hit output at Chevron's 8.9mn t/yr Wheatstone LNG in Western Australia (WA), where the unionised workforce has today escalated its industrial action in response to stalled talks on pay and conditions.

"Chevron Australia is working to resume full production at the Wheatstone Gas Facility following a fault which has impacted about 25pc of LNG production," a spokesman confirmed just after 4pm local time (8am GMT).

Chevron said the cause has been identified and restart activities have commenced, while domestic gas facilities were unaffected.

Argus understands Chevron has a non-union business contingency planning workforce in place at the plant.

Dutch TTF gas prices have traded at fluctuating levels during morning trade, with the market volatile in response to the ongoing strikes.

Union members at Chevron's WA LNG assets had earlier announced they would continue irregular strike action rather than a full stoppage of duties, as they press their claim for a new enterprise agreement ahead of a crucial court hearing on 22 September.

The Offshore Alliance (OA) union had promised to escalate its strike at Wheatstone LNG, the 15.6mn t/yr Gorgon LNG and Wheatstone offshore gas platform in WA to full-day strikes from 14-29 September, but has since decided to scale down its impact.

"OA members in the many different work areas across the three separate facilities are meeting regularly to determine what action they will take as a team," an OA spokesman said on 14 September. "That strike action could take many forms from single one-hour stoppages to longer action and this action may differ team to team, or it could be collective action consistent across all 500 members."

The OA has also alleged Chevron has exerted "improper pressure and coercion" on its members by threatening pay deductions during periods of legally protected industrial action.

"Chevron Australia has asked employees to let their supervisor know if they do not intend to participate in the industrial action notified by the unions," a spokesman said on 14 September. "This is to ensure that we appropriately pay employees for that work."

The firm rejects claims it is acting unlawfully and the spokesman said Chevron respects the right of employees to take protected industrial action.

Chevron has applied to Australia's workplace arbiter the Fair Work Commission (FWC) for an intractable bargaining declaration to be issued regarding three enterprise agreements (EAs), for Wheatstone and Gorgon LNG as well as Wheatstone upstream workers. A hearing will be held in Sydney on 22 September. If the FWC grants the declaration it would gain power to make orders regarding the EAs.
