Japanese property developer Daito Trust Construction plans to start procuring biomass fuel from 16 October to restart the 5.6MW Asago biomass power generation plant by the April 2024-March 2025 fiscal year.

Daito will start procuring biomass fuels like wood chips, unused wood materials, pruned branches and root stocks, from suppliers based in Hyogo. Daito will also utilise wood scraps obtained from imported lumber for construction.

Daito established a new subsidiary Daito Bioenergy on 13 September to run the Asago plant, located in western prefecture Hyogo, after purchasing the plant from power utility Kansai Electric Power in July. Kansai shut the plant on 24 December 2022, as it faced difficulties operating the plant because of rising global wood chip prices. Kansai reached an agreement with Daito to sell the plant in July.

Daito upgraded the plant's facilities to allow it to burn different types and qualities of fuels for stable fuel supplies. The firm also aims to boost the number of operating days to increase power generation to 40 GWh/yr, lifting consumption of biomass fuels. Kansai formerly used 36,000 t/yr of wood chips, which were mostly imported, to generate 37 GWh/yr.

Daito also plans to use a wood chip production facility. The company said it added additional equipment, but did not disclose its current output and storage capacity. The facility had a wood chip manufacturing capacity of 30 t/hour and a storage capacity of 600t when it was owned by Kansai.
