GranBio, Honeywell to pursue SAF output in the US

Brazilian advanced biofuels firm GranBio and US engineering company Honeywell have agreed to pursue production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from ethanol in the US state of Georgia.

The project will combine Honeywell's alcohol-to-jet (AtJ) conversion pathway with GranBio's second-generation, or cellulosic, ethanol (E2G) output, the two companies said today.

GranBio's US subsidiary Avapco received an $80mn grant from the US Department of Energy's SAF Grand Challenge Roadmap program to accelerate the development of technology for SAF production in Georgia.

The US Department of Energy plans to fund 17 biofuels projects at various stages of development run by private companies and universities.

For Granbio, that financial support is helping build a semi-commercial scale plant capable of producing 10mn l/yr of SAF, using second-generation ethanol made from wood chips and sugarcane bagasse.

"The goal is to produce SAF with a carbon-neutral footprint," GranBio chief executive Bernardo Grandin told Argus on the sidelines of a sugarcane industry event in Sao Paulo last month.

Total investments in the project amount to $220mn, which is expected to come on line in 2027, according to Grandin.

The partnership with Honeywell comes as the US conglomerate has gained momentum in the SAF industry, with its processing technology to convert corn-based, cellulosic, or sugar-based ethanol into renewable aviation fuel.

In Brazil, Granbio's history is intertwined with the promising emergence and, ultimately, rocky development of E2G as a commercially viable biofuel.
