Australian renewable energy firm Genex Power has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Hong Kong-owned utility EnergyAustralia for its proposed 258MW Kidston Stage 3 Wind Project (K3W) in Queensland state.

K3W, a 50:50 joint venture with Japanese power producer and wholesaler J-Power, was announced in 2022 as part of the Kidston Clean Energy Hub, 280km west of the city of Townsville.

The PPA relates to 30pc of K3W's output of wind energy and large-scale generation certificates at a fixed price, over the decade from commencement of operations, Genex said.

The PPA hinges on a final investment decision for K3W by 31 December 2024. The PPA is the second offtake Genex has signed with EnergyAustralia, and follows an energy storage services agreement inked in 2020 for the adjacent 250MW Kidston pumped storage hydro project.

Sydney-based Genex suffered a setback at its 50MW Bouldercombe battery energy storage system project, also in Queensland state, when a battery unit caught fire last month.

EnergyAustralia, which is the owner of the 1,480MW Yallourn brown coal plant in Victoria that is planned for closure in 2028, is targeting up to 3,000MW of renewable energy to be either committed or in operation by 2030. The firm presently owns mainly gas and coal-fired generators but holds PPAs with 10 operational renewable energy projects.
