Japan's power utility Hokkaido Electric Power will extend the closure of its 350MW No.1 oil-fired power unit at the Shiriuchi power complex as it requires more time to fix damaged equipment.

Hokkaido plans to resume the No.1 unit on 8 December, ahead of the peak winter demand. The No.1 unit at Shiriuchi power plant was originally scheduled to restart operations on 8 July after a regular maintenance. But Hokkaido found damage at a steam turbine during the inspection, resulting in the unit postponing its restart date to 30 November. Hokkaido then decided to further extend the restart date as the damage requires more time to fix.

Hokkaido only uses fuel oil at its oil-fired power units and consumed 9,055 b/d of fuel oil in April-September, up by 17pc from the same period in 2022, according to the Hokkaido's latest financial results. Hokkaido shut the 569.4MW No.1 gas-fired power unit at its Ishikariwan-Shinko power station during April-June because of regular maintenance. The closure of the gas-fired power unit increased consumption of fuel oil, Hokkaido said.
