Chemical producer Covestro announced a multi-million dollarmodernization of its toluene diisocyanate (TDI) production in Dormagen, Germany, to improve energy efficiency.
A new reactor will use up to 80pc less energy then typical TDI production processes by using steam generation, the company said. Current annual TDI production capacity of 300,000 metric tons will remain unchanged.
The first phase has been completed and further upgrades will be made through spring 2025. The Dormagen plant is expected to continually supply TDI during additional work.
TDI is used to manufacture flexible foam used in mattresses, furniture and car seats.
