Day-ahead and intra-day liquidity on Poland's TGE commodities exchange exceeded the previous all-time high by 1pc in November, while volumes in the forward market declined but remained up on the year.

Total day-ahead and intra-day base-load volumes in November continued their upward trend from the previous month as liquidity increased to 6.24TWh and topped the previous all-time high of 6.18TWh set in January 2023 (see day-ahead, intra-day chart). The increase was primarily driven by a 719GWh rise in day-ahead volumes, while intra-day activity fell by 71GWh on the month. January-November liquidity has been higher than the same period for any year since 2012, with volumes totalling 57.3TWh so far this year, from 33TWh across the entirety of 2022.

Day-ahead and intra-day liquidity has also picked up with the exchange adding two new peak-load block products for the trading hours of 8-17 and 18-22 at the end of June. Market participants have also switched to trading more day-ahead and intra-day products owing to the rise of renewable generation.

In the forward market, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly forward volumes fell from 8.12TWh in October to 7.89TWh in November — albeit around 2.82TWh above the same month in 2022. Total volumes from January-November reached 75.6TWh, about 25pc lower on the year and around 57pc down from the same period in 2021.

Traded volumes of yearly base-load contracts declined to their lowest since July at 4.52TWh from 5.52TWh in October, while quarterly liquidity increased to 2TWh from 1.71TWh. Exchanged volumes for weekly and monthly contracts also rose, climbing by 264GWh and 50GWh on the month, respectively.

Peak-load calendar and quarterly contracts were the only peak products to register gains on the month, increasing to 264GWh and 63GWh, respectively, from 136GWh and no deals in October. Peak-load monthly products declined by 33pc, while no deals were registered for weekly contracts for the seventh consecutive month.

The number of guarantees of origin traded on the Polish energy exchange nearly halved in November, while gas trading activity rose on the year and was the highest for any month since December 2022.
