Finnish transmission system operator (TSO) Fingrid has raised its "readiness" as power demand has increased to "exceptionally high levels" owing to frigid temperatures, with day-ahead power prices in Finland for Friday delivery climbing by more than three-and-a-half times on the day.

The power situation is anticipated to remain tight as a result of a prolonged cold front that will last for several days, according to Fingrid. The price of electricity rose to an hourly high of about €1,900/MWh for delivery in hours 18-19 on Friday, with the average daily price closing at €890.54/MWh — up from €228.12/MWh today.

Average temperatures in Helsinki are forecast at about minus 15°C on Friday before falling to about minus 16-21°C over 6-7 January.

"During the past day, there have been challenges in the availability of individual electricity production plants," Fingrid manager Tuomas Rauhala said today. "Wind power production is still higher compared with the estimated low wind situation, and it is 1-2GW today, according to the forecast." Wind forecasts anticipate a load factor of 28pc, or 1.59GW on Friday in Finland, with load factors of 15-28pc expected over the weekend.

Peak consumption exceeded 15GW on Wednesday, while the highest hourly average demand was 14.9GW for hours 19-20 of the day, according to the TSO. This surpassed Fingrid's estimate of 14.3GW of peak consumption in its winter assessment released in September.

Nuclear capacity in the Nordics also fell on Wednesday as Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall lowered the capacity of 1.1GW unit 2 at the Forsmark nuclear plant by about 630MW, which has added increased pressure on the system.
