Shell has been cleared by Australian authorities to begin drilling activity during January-March at its Crux field in Western Australia's (WA) offshore Browse basin.
Shell received approval last month from offshore regulator the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority. It accepted Shell's Crux development drilling environmental plan on 22 December, with work including drilling template and docking pile installation proposed for this year's first quarter.
The Crux drilling programme is the first significant field activity planned for the project's development, with Shell to install the unmanned platform's jacket to support the deck and topsides after 1 August.
Crux is located 190km offshore the WA coastline and will backfill the 3.6mn t/yr Prelude floating LNG (FLNG), which restarted exporting LNG last month following extensive maintenance that began in August.
Shell took a final investment decision on Crux in May 2022 and anticipates its first gas will flow in 2027 through a 160km pipeline connecting the platform servicing five production wells to Prelude FLNG.
