A total of 320 organisations — including several major firms in energy, mining, chemicals and shipping — representing $4tn will start disclosing their impact on nature annually.

Energy firms Iberdrola, Drax, Enel and RWE, agribusiness Bunge, mining major Vale and retailers Carrefour, Ikea and Coca Cola have agreed to start making biodiversity disclosures based on recommendations from the Taskforce on Nature-related Finance Disclosures (TNFD), which were published last September after a two-year pilot period. The recommendations are in line with the Kunming-Montreal biodiversity framework, agreed at last year's UN biodiversity summit, and are consistent with other global reporting standards such as those from the International Sustainability Standards Board. TNFD recommends firms to publicly disclose their approach to nature-related risks and impact management, as well as their metrics and targets, strategies going forward and governance oversight.

A total of 106 financial institutions representing $14tn in assets under management (AUM) have also agreed to make nature-related disclosures based on the TNFD, including Bank of America, BSI, Credit Agricole, Drax, Federated Hermes, London Stock Exchange, Mitsubishi, Nippon, Nomura, Schroders and UBS.

About 43pc of companies are headquartered in Europe and 42pc are in Asia-Pacific.

The TNFD is related to the Taskforce on Climate-related Finance Disclosures (TCFD), which has 4,900 signatories disclosing climate impacts. The TCFD was launched in December 2015.
