Japan's electricity demand fell in January, owing to higher-than-usual temperatures which capped power demand for heating purposes across the country.

Power demand in Japan's 10 service areas averaged 107.2GW in January, down by 4.3pc on the year, according to the country's power agency the Organisation for Cross-regional Co-ordination of Transmission Operators. Demand in the Tokyo metropolitan area fell by 4.5pc on the year to 34.3GW, while demand in the Kansai area dropped by 2.6pc on the year to 17.3GW. But January power demand was higher on the month by 4.3pc because of a seasonal drop in temperatures. Power demand in both the Tokyo and Kansai areas rose by 5.6pc on the month.

Liquidity on the Japan Electric Power Exchange (Jepx) was at 21.3TWh in January, dropping sharply by 33pc on the year, but higher by 2.6pc compared with the previous month. The traded volumes on Jepx accounted for 26.7pc of overall power demand, lower than the 38.3pc in January 2023.

Japan's power demand has been slower since last month as most areas in the country have experienced warmer-than-usual winter weather. Temperatures in the country's 10 major cities, which includes Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Osaka, Takamatsu, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Naha, averaged 6.8°C in January, down by 21pc or 1.2°C from January 2023, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The temperature in Tokyo — the area which consumes the most power — averaged 7.1°C in January, compared with 5.7°C a year ago. Electricity demand has been capped by less need for heating.

Japan has ample nuclear power supply, with the country's nuclear power output capacity totalling 9,558MW after Japan's main power utility Kansai Electric Power resumed the 826MW Mihama No.3 reactor on 20 January.

This nuclear capacity was higher compared with the average output of 8,786MW in January 2023, according to the ministry of economy, trade and industry (Meti).

Japan's thermal power generation totalled 90TWh in January 2023. It burned 11mn t of coal, 3.8mn t of LNG and 151,224b/d of oil for power generation during the month, Meti data show.
