VLSFO viscosity at 4-year high in 4Q

Global viscosity levels for very low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) rose in the fourth quarter to the highest since at least four years, according to French classification society Bureau Veritas.

VLSFO viscosity levels at 50°C averaged 167 centistokes (cst) in fourth quarter 2023, the highest since at least the first quarter of 2020, when Bureau Veritas began reporting the data.

VLSFO viscosity in the fourth quarter last year was up by 6pc from the fourth quarter of 2022 and up by 17pc from the same quarter in 2021.

The ports with the highest average VLSFO viscosity in the quarter were Algeciras, Spain, at 281cst, Piraeus, Greece, at 229cst, Fujairah, UAE at 210cst, the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) trading corridor at 195cst and Gibraltar at 190cst, Bureau Veritas said.

On the other hand, the ports with the lowest average viscosity were Houston, Texas, at 75cst; Busan, South Korea, at 92cst; Santos, Brazil, at 125cst; Singapore, the world's largest bunkering hub, at 131cst; and Istanbul, Turkey, at 135cst.

Higher viscosity levels create less friction in the ship's engine, reducing wear.

The ARA hub had the highest percentage of off-specification VLSFO, totaling 5pc, according to Bureau Veritas. Istanbul had the second most at 3pc. Busan previously had the highest percentage in the third quarter of 2023, totaling 9pc, but that dropped to zero in the fourth quarter. Off-specification marine fuel can cause engine failure.

The average viscosity level for high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) ticked down to 312cst in Q4 2023, according to Bureau Veritas. It totaled 313cst in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Ports that had the highest average viscosity level for HSFO were Balboa, Panama, at 351cst; Singapore at 347cst; and Gothenburg, Sweden at 343cst. The three lowest were Piraeus at 210cst; Yeosu, South Korea, at 234cst; and Houston at 261cst.

Piraeus had the highest percentage of off-spec HSFO at 11pc, followed by Singapore at 3pc.
