South Africa's Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has confirmed a train derailment involving four locomotives and six wagons, disrupting traffic bound for Richard's Bay.

The accident occurred on 2 April in the Richards Bay South region and affected the coal export line, where "there is no movement currently", according to market participants. The derailment has caused operations to shut on three rail lines, "affecting railings into both Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) and the Richards Bay multi-purpose terminal (MPT)", a producer said.

TFR transported 1.1mn t of export coal from its North Corridor to RBCT in the week ending 31 March. This was 68,000t down on a week earlier, when railed volumes to RBCT hit a two-year high. Stocks at RBCT as of 31 March stood at 2.6mn t, about 6pc lower on the week. They are likely to fall further in the coming weeks because of the derailment.

This is the second TFR accident this year, after a derailment in mid-January shut the two key rail lines to the RBCT for around a week.

TFR said it does not have an estimated time for when repairs will be completed. The cause of accident is yet to be determined, the firm added.
