FAA, EASA certify CFM LEAP-1A HPT blade

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have certified CFM International's updated high-pressure turbine (HPT) hardware kit for the LEAP-1A engine.

The kit is intended to increase the durability of the turbine section and so the engine's time on wing, especially in hot environments such as the Middle East. It includes the HPT stage-one blade, stage-one nozzle and forward inner nozzle support.

CFM International is a French-US joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace. The CFM LEAP-1A non-exclusively powers Airbus' A320neo range, while the LEAP-1B variant exclusively powers Boeing's 737 MAX Aircraft.

Insufficient supply of HPT blades for the LEAP-1A variant curbed engine deliveries in the first three quarters, Safran said. In its third-quarter results call, Safran confirmed it expected certification in the coming weeks and had blades ready to ship, especially for maintenance, repair, and overhaul markets.

Certification on a new HPT blade for the Boeing variant is scheduled at the end of 2025.

High-pressure turbine blades are manufactured from nickel-based superalloys containing chromium, molybdenum, cobalt and other metals that can withstand high temperatures.
