UK battery manufacturing firm Volklec has signed an agreement with Chinese battery supplier Far East Battery (FEB) that will allow Volklec to produce lithium-ion batteries in the UK, it said today.

Volklec will be supported by a team of specialists from FEB to build advanced lithium-ion batteries at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) at Coventry, in central England.

The firms have signed an exclusive licence agreement that will open up the transfer of technology and knowledge between them.

Two types of lithium-ion battery cells will be produced. The first type will be an energy cell used in energy storage sectors. Volklec will use UKBIC's existing 100MWh production line, and manufacturing will start later this year.

The second type will be a power cell used for vehicle, aerospace, marine and off-road manufacturing. Volklec will install a 1GWh production line by the end of 2026 to manufacture the battery.

Volklec also plans to build a 10GWh factory by the end of this decade, which will require £1bn ($1.3bn) in investment.

"There is an urgent need for new independent manufacturers to secure the battery supply chain in the UK," Volklec executive director Phil Popham said.

"Volklec bridges the gap between the established supply lines to large OEMs — who often have dedicated gigafactories lined up — and the lower-volume niche players seeking surety of supply," Popham said.
