Petrobras to offer B24 in Santos next year

Brazil's state-controlled Petrobras will begin offering B24 biofuel for bunkering early next year in the Santos port.

Santos is the biggest bunkering port in Brazil. Cruise and container ships would drive B24 demand, Hans-Jorg Fuchsloch, head of bunker trading for Petrobras, told the audience at Petrospot's Maritime Week Americas conference in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday.

Petrobras began supplying B24 — a blend of 24pc fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and 76pc very-low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) — in the Rio Grande port earlier this year. The company says the fuel cuts greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20pc compared with conventional VLSFO. The B24 blend is compliant with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and requires a five-day delivery lead time.

In 2024, Petrobras supplied conventional bunker fuel to more than 7,000 vessels across Brazilian ports. Brazil's top four bunkering ports in order of size are Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Paranagua and Rio Grande.

Petrobras' average monthly bunker sales in Brazil were 296,000 metric tonnes (t) of VLSFO and 52,000t of marine gasoil (MGO) in 2024, said Fuchsloch. Southeastern ports, including Santos and Rio de Janeiro, accounted for 226,000t/month of VLSFO and 48,000t/month of MGO, primarily driven by container and dry bulk traffic. In Brazil's southern ports such as Paranagua and Rio Grande, the company sold an average of 46,000t/month of VLSFO and 2,000t/month of MGO.

Separately, Petrobras purchased around 133,000t of marine fuel in 2024 for its own tanker fleet. Of this, 69pc was VLSFO, 20pc was high-sulphur fuel oil and the remaining share was MGO. The company sourced 47pc of these purchases from Singapore, 16pc from other parts of Asia, excluding Singapore, and 15pc from North and Central America.
