ATI adds Ti sheet to product suite

Specialty alloys producer ATI is producing titanium sheet in both 6Al-4V and 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo alloys at its new finishing facility in Pageland, South Carolina, the company said Thursday.

The Texas-based company had referenced the facility previously in relation to signing five-year, $1bn supply deal with aircraft manufacturer Airbus, but details remained sparse about the 125,000ft2 plant until Thursday, when ATI officially announced it began operations in the first quarter.
ATI touted that the site allows the company to offer titanium alloy sheet at "production level" for the first time, adding to its product portfolio with aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEM).

Both titanium alloys on which ATI has focused are crucial for applications in airframe structures, with 6-4 prized for its strength-to-weight ratio and 6-2-4-2 prized for its heat resistance, among other properties.

The company can turn out sheet as thin as 0.02in and as long as 25ft at the facility, which has electric furnaces for heat treating and a pickle line for surface finishing. ATI declined to disclose Pageland's annual production capacity.

ATI has begun qualifications to prove out its equipment and systems with Airbus and other customers. It said two-thirds of Pageland's output will be covered by long-term offtake agreements (LTA), while the remaining third "will be targeted toward additional LTAs, transactional orders and emergent business opportunities."
