LNG Canada ramps up production quicker than expected

The 7mn t/yr first train at the 14mn t/yr LNG Canada export facility has exported its second cargo today, one week after the first cargo sailed away, suggesting that the project might have ramped up production for steady loadings, market participants said.

The 174,000m³ Puteri Sejinjang — chartered by project stakeholder Petronas — sailed away from the project this morning, according to shiptracking data from Kpler. The cargo has declared to arrive at Japan's 26.1mn t/yr Chita LNG import terminal on 28 July.

The third vessel likely to load from the project is scheduled to be the 174,000m³ Diamond Gas Metropolis, chartered by stakeholder Mitsubishi's subsidiary, Diamond Gas International. The vessel expects to arrive at Kitimat on 12 July, according to its AIS signal. And the 174,000m³ Wu Dang appears to be headed to LNG Canada, with a declared arrival date of 14 July.

The project has exported two full-size cargoes within a week, and is scheduled to load another cargo in another week, which has surpassed some market participants' expectations. The first cargo might have partially re-exported the cool-down cargo the project received in April, but the first train could be producing at more than half of its full capacity one week after exporting its first cargo, based on the current export rate.

Flaring near the site has been observed consistently since late June, according to Nasa's fire information system, which is also a sign of activity at the facility.
