Israeli energy firm OG Energy has completed a deal to acquire Japanese trading firm Mitsui's stake in the east coast gas supply project (ECSP) located in Australia's offshore Otway basin, it announced today.
Completion of the transaction means OG will reimburse the operator, Australian independent Amplitude Energy, for 50pc of historical costs to March 2025 for the ECSP, formerly known as Otway phase 3.
The ECSP could tap 90 TJ/d (2.4mn m³/d) in additional volumes for processing via Amplitude's Athena gas plant by 2028 but is yet to reach a final investment decision.
Athena averaged 8.7 TJ/d of production in April-June against a nameplate capacity of 150 TJ/d, while Amplitude's total output rose in the period against a year and quarter earlier (see table).
Some 358bn ft³ (10.1bn m³) in gross reserves exists across the Elanora, Isabella and Julie fields, Adelaide-based Amplitude said.
The plant is located in Victoria state, which is grappling with dwindling gas supply due to depleting fields and a lack of investment in new supply. Previous governments have banned certain exploration activities and sought to downplay the importance of gas in the state's energy mix, but state policy now aims to boost supply.
Australian independent Beach Energy and ConocoPhillips both control acreage for exploration activities, in addition to Amplitude's ECSP. Australian independent Woodside intends to acquire operatorship of the Gippsland basin joint venture in eastern Victoria from partner ExxonMobil, where an additional 200PJ of gas could be tapped for domestic markets, it said.
Seaborne gas imports are also possible. The Victoria state government recently approved plans for Australian refiner Viva Energy's 750 TJ/d LNG import terminal near the city of Geelong.
