Australian lean beef prices hit multi-year high

Australian lean beef trim prices have risen to multi-year highs because of strong US demand, persistent drought conditions and tariff-related disruptions to competing suppliers.

The Australian frozen 95 chemical lean (CL) bull trim price climbed to A$11.20/kg ($7.25/kg) on 22 August, up by A$0.20/kg from the previous week and 11.4pc higher since early July, Argus data show. The price exceeded A$11/kg for the first time since Argus began publishing the series in February. The price has risen about 40pc since 2020, when it was around A$7.30/kg, market participants said. The US Department of Agriculture reported fresh domestic 92-94CL trim prices averaging at $4.41/lb on 22 August.

Fast-food chains primarily use lean beef for blending with fatty trim to produce burger patties and other ground products. US buyers have been the most active, while Asian importers are under pressure to keep pace to secure volumes.

Australian exporters anticipated increased US buying because of drought-induced herd reductions. The recent imposition of tariffs on Brazilian and New Zealand beef imports has further shifted demand towards Australian product. This price rally comes despite a seasonal lift in US cow slaughter ahead of winter.

Some Australian processors are holding back from the market or selling short, expecting prices to continue rising through the end of the year — or until Brazilian tariffs are lifted.

Australian beef exports are also running at record levels. The US imported 43,038t of Australian beef in July, up by 18pc on the month, while China's imports rose by 12pc to 31,436t.

A large national herd, favourable seasonal conditions in northern Australia and high feedlot inventories will likely support continued strong export volumes.
