New Chinese joiners in the Brazilian electric vehicle (EV) market nudged EV sales to a record in August, despite a broader slowdown in car demand.

Brazilian consumers bought an all-time high 24,540 EVs in August, a slight increase from July's 24,486 units and up by 70pc from a year before, according to specialized consulting firm Bright. Demand for electric vehicles — including fully electric (BEV) and hybrids — remained high in August despite a broader slowdown in car sales, which fell by 6.9pc from the previous month and by 3.8pc on the year.

EVs represented 11.4pc of all cars sold in Brazil in August, up from 10.6pc in July, which signals a growing acceptance rate for EVs in the country.

Chinese carmakers that recently joined Brazil's EV market, such as GAC, Geely, Omoda and Jaecoo, in addition to new models from market leader BYD, helped lift sales, Bright said. The new joiners contributed with a combined 1,478 units in August, with Jaecoo leading the way with 635 cars sold, followed by GAC, at 539.

China's brands accounted for around 10pc of all vehicles sold in Brazil in August, underscoring its growing presence in the market. BYD, the best selling brand for both BEVs and hybrids in August, overtook Jeep as the sixth most popular overall car brand in Brazil at 9,750 units, its best position ever.

Volkswagen holds the top spot, with 33,870 sold vehicles.
