Australia's HAMR, OneFortyOne sign biomethanol MoU

Australian low-carbon fuels firm HAMR Energy has signed an initial agreement with forestry firm OneFortyOne for the supply of sustainable biomass for biomethanol production in Australia and New Zealand.

The agreement marks the next step in the development of HAMR Energy's renewable fuels project in Portland, Victoria, that will produce up to 300,000 t/yr of biomethanol derived from residue biomass and green hydrogen. HAMR aims to start output at the facility by 2030.

OneFortyOne will supply sample wood fibre to HAMR over the next 18-24 months for testing and in-field operational trials to refine feedstock assumptions, with the aim to progress to long-term supply agreements in future, it said on 23 September.

HAMR has initial agreements in place to supply all the feedstock for the Portland renewable fuels project and has recently completed pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) studies with global chemical design company ThyssenKrupp UHDE, positioning the firm to move forward with the next phase of project, co-founder of HAMR David Stribley said in a press statement.

OneFortyOne is a forestry and sawmilling business with operations spanning the border of South Australia and Victoria. The company also has forestry assets in New Zealand and HAMR is considering building a biomethanol facility in the country.

The Australian government earmarked A$1.1bn ($740mn) to support biofuels and e-fuels under a 10-year incentive programme on 17 September. The Cleaner Fuels Program aims to incentivise production of biofuels, e-fuels made by combining renewable hydrogen and CO2 and low-carbon fuels made from waste materials.
