Italy's Eni will announce a final investment decision (FID) this week for its 3.6 mn t/yr Coral Norte floating LNG (FLNG) development, offshore Mozambique, a source familiar with the project told Argus on the sidelines of the African Energy Week conference in Cape Town.
The much-anticipated project achieved approval from Mozambique's government in April. In July, engineering company Technip's chief executive Arnaud Pieton said that work was already progressing on the project "as if a full FID has been announced".
Coral Norte FLNG's design is a read-across of the 3.4mn t/yr Coral Sur FLNG project, which has been producing LNG cargoes since November 2022. It will replicate the design of the earlier project's FLNG vessel to save on cost and time. Both projects will produce from the country's Rovuma basin.
The project is the first sanctioning of three new major LNG developments that are hotly anticipated in Mozambique. Earlier this week, TotalEnergies said it is still waiting for the Mozambican government to approve the updated development plan for its 13.1mn t/yr Mozambique LNG project before lifting a four-year force majeure on the project. ExxonMobil expects to reach FID on its 18mn t/yr Rovuma LNG export project in early 2026.
