Cool-down cargo likely headed for Golden Pass LNG

QatarEnergy's laden 174,000m3Imsaikah LNG carrier is signaling an early December arrival in Port Arthur, Texas, where the company is commissioning the 18.1mn t/yr (2.4bn ft³/d) Golden Pass LNG export terminal with project partner ExxonMobil, ship-tracking data from Kpler show.

The Imsaikah departed QatarEnergy's 77mn t/yr Ras Laffan export terminal Wednesday with a declared arrival at Port Arthur on 1 December, according to Kpler data and the vessel's Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal. The US Department of Energy (DOE) authorized Golden Pass LNG to import and later re-export cool-down cargoes starting in October.

The LNG is likely to be used to cool down the terminal's equipment as part of its commissioning process to begin production. Liquefaction terminals typically require only one or two cool-down cargoes, judging by similarly sized facilities.

Golden Pass LNG did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

QatarEnergy has a 70pc stake in Golden Pass LNG, with ExxonMobil holding a 30pc stake. Both companies said earlier this year that first production at the three-train facility could happen by the end of 2025, with initial output possibly slipping into 2026.

The project's developers expect to bring each train on line in six-month intervals.
