Norway's Hydro announces Qatalum shutdown

Norwegian aluminium producer Hydro announced today that its Qatar-based joint venture Qatalum has initiated a controlled shutdown of its aluminium operations after the company's energy supplier, QatarEnergy, stopped producing LNG. QatarEnergy took its Ras Laffan LNG export terminal off line on 2 March after a drone attack at the wider Ras Laffan industrial complex as part of the Israel/US-Iran war.

The shutdown is expected to be completed by the end of March and it could take 6-12 months to restart the smelter, if it is fully closed, Hydro said. The group has issued a force majeure notice to its Qatalum customers.

Qatalum is a 50:50 joint venture between Hydro and Qatari producer Qatar Aluminum Manufacturing. Qatalum has a nameplate capacity of 636,000t of primary aluminium and also operates a 664,000t casthouse. The firm has also stopped production of some downstream products including aluminium, urea, polymers and methanol.

Demand for aluminium value-added products from Asian consumers has increased over the past two days because of rising concerns of prolonged shipping disruptions through the strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.
