Japan's primary aluminium imports rose by 6.6pc year on year and 16pc month on month to 89,497t in March 2026.

Australia remained Japan's largest primary aluminium supplier in March, despite shipments falling by 9.1pc year on year and 14pc month on month to 22,756t, according to customs data.

Brazil ranked second, with shipments increasing by 7.4pc on the year to 19,504t. Its imports from India more than doubled on the year and rose by 28pc on the month to 13,619t.

There was higher domestic production and shipments of flat-rolled and extruded aluminium products in March, supported by recovering demand from the automotive sector.

Flat-rolled product shipments for can stock rose by 3.6pc on the year to 33,639t, supported by seasonal product launches, the Japan Aluminium Association (JAA) said. Deliveries to the automotive sector also increased by 1.2pc to 16,105t, in line with higher domestic vehicle output.

Extrusions output and domestic shipments both turned positive for the first time in six months. Shipments to the automotive sector rose by 15pc on the year to 13,149t.

Japan's domestic car output rose by 8.8pc on the year to 742,120 units in March, according to data compiled by Argus from eight major automakers.

Demand from the construction sector remained weak, with fewer housing starts weighing on aluminium consumption. Extruded aluminium shipments to construction fell by 5.3pc on the year to 27,221t. Japan's housing starts dropped sharply by 29pc year on year to 63,495 units in March 2026.

Both production and shipments of aluminium foil declined in March to 7,608t and 8,060t, respectively, partly because of reduced demand for automotive lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications, JAA said.

Japan's imports of aluminium alloy ingots (ADC12) fell by 3pc on the year to 79,137t in March. But the average import value increased by 5.6pc on the year to $2,969/t.
