US rare earth (RE)-free magnet producer Niron Magnetics secured a $150mn loan from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) to advance its magnet plant in Sartell, Minnesota.
The loan will cover construction, equipment and operational readiness at the site, which is due to start production in 2027, Niron said on 18 August.
SMSC, a sovereign Dakota tribal government, first invested in Niron in 2016 and took part in the company's 2023 funding round.
Niron broke ground at Sartell in September 2025 on a 190,000 ft² plant designed for 1,500 metric tonne (t)/yr of iron nitride permanent magnets. The plant will be operational in early 2027.
The financing comes on top of a conditional loan of up to $150mn from the US Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital. Niron also received a $10mn Minnesota Forward Fund grant in October 2025.
Niron is developing RE-free magnets as an alternative to neodymium-iron-boron magnets, targeting data center infrastructure, automotive, industrial, consumer electronics, clean energy and defense markets. It agreed a supply deal in July with Japanese precision motor manufacturer Aspina to develop RE-free motor systems.
Sartell is the first unit in what Niron describes as a modular manufacturing platform. The company is selecting a site for a second US plant with 10,000 t/yr capacity, with groundbreaking expected in 2028.
