India’s Jet Airways records improved passenger traffic

Singapore, 18 June (Argus) — India's Jet Airways recorded a 41pc increase in its domestic passenger numbers and a 37pc increase in international passenger traffic in May, underlining the country's steady economic growth that should support jet fuel demand.

The airline's seat factor, or load factor, for domestic operations rose by 19.5pc from May last year to 82.5pc. International passenger traffic had a seat factor of 80.3pc, against 75.4pc recorded in May 2009.

The strong growth in passenger traffic was attributed to the carrier capitalising on the improvement in global business and leisure travel. The airline's wholly owned subsidiary, JetLite, also saw a rise of 85.3pc in its seat factor during the same period.

But rising jet fuel costs continue to cast a shadow over the sector's profitability, with India's state-owned refiners raising jet fuel prices by almost 2pc in line with international oil prices. This ended a brief respite that domestic airlines enjoyed when prices were cut for the first time in almost four months at the start of June.

Indian refiners revise jet fuel prices on the first and the 16th of every month, based on oil price movements of the previous two weeks.
