China's largest international airline Air China consumed 15pc more jet fuel in August compared with a year earlier on the back of double-digit growth in passenger and cargo capacity.
The flag carrier consumed 309,700t of jet fuel last month, up from around 270,000t in August last year. Its average jet fuel cost rose by 16pc over the same period to 5,605 yuan/t ($832/t) as domestic prices rose.
Air China paid an average Yn6,043/t for jet fuel used on domestic flights and an average Yn5,187/t for international flights in August, up 17pc and 14pc respectively over the same month last year.
The airline's jet fuel consumption rose as economic conditions improved compared with a year earlier and the peak summer travel season sparked demand. Air China's passenger capacity rose by 15.2pc in August from a year earlier while cargo capacity increased by 11.8pc over the same period. Its passenger and cargo load factors, measures of utilisation rates, rose 2.4-2.7 percentage points to 84pc and 59.2pc respectively.
