London, 3 April (Argus) — UK-based ethanol producer Ensus has announced a temporary halt in production at its 400mn l/yr ethanol refinery, citing difficulties arising from a poor UK wheat harvest and a “challenging” European ethanol market.
The announcement comes seven months after production at the £300mn ($470mn) ethanol plant at Wilton on Teesside restarted following a 15-month halt in operations.
Expressing frustration at the slow development of the UK and European markets, the company attributed the latest closure to a continuing disparity between European ethanol prices and input costs alongside difficulties arising from the UK's poor 2012 wheat harvest and rising gas prices.
Peter Sopp, Ensus chief executive, said: “Ensus is able to supply genuine environmentally sustainable ethanol to satisfy demand, but unfortunately market conditions are working against us at the moment We believe that it is critical that the government continues to support the use of high quality sustainable biofuels.”
The company failed to indicate when production will resume but affirmed that it remains confident in the long-term future of the sector.
Since ethanol production at Ensus restarted at the end of August 2012, market prices have dipped from €775/m³ to as low as €608/m³, pressed down by poor economic growth and weakened gasoline demand through the winter months.
A sudden shift in the UK wheat balance has also complicated the outlook for the refinery. In March, the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) reported that heavy rain in summer and autumn 2012 had cut planted UK winter wheat acreage by 25pc.
Similarly, provisional results from a wheat production survey conducted by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in December forecast a 14pc decline in domestic crop yield, down to 13.3mn t in 2012-13 from 15.2mn t in 2011-12.
