London, 20 June (Argus) — Crude steel production rose in May as a result of increased Chinese volumes, the latest figures from the World Steel Association show.

But without Chinese growth, global steel production would be contracting. China produced 325mn t of steel in the first five months of the year, up from 301mn t over the same period last year. Total global steel production reached 658mn t in January-May, up from 644mn t in the previous year but only showing 14mn t of growth rather than the 24mn t in the Chinese figures.

Global crude steel production was up on the year by 2.6pc to 136mn t and up from 132mn t in April. China continued to drive output, producing 67mn t or nearly half of the global total. This was up from 65.7mn t in the previous month and 62.5mn t in May 2012. Japanese output rose by 4.3pc on the year to 9.6mn t, while Indian steel production increased by 1.5pc to 6.7mn t. South Korean output fell by 7.1pc to 5.5mn t. Total Asia-Pacific production of 91mn t was up by 5.7pc year on year.

In the EU27, output continued to fall with total production of 14.7mn t showing a year-on-year drop of 4.7pc, although it was marginally higher than April's 14.1mn t. German crude steel production in May was down on the year by 1.5pc at 3.7mn t, while Italian steel output fell by 11.1pc to 2.3mn t. But Spain bucked the trend, with output rising by 4.3pc to 1.4mn t.

Outside the EU, Turkish steel output in May fell by 2pc to 3mn t, while Ukrainian production dropped by 6.5pc on the year to 2.8mn t. Russian output was flat at 6.1mn t.

Total North American output fell by 5pc with the US producing 7.5mn t of steel in May, down from 7.9mn t in May 2012 but marginally higher than April's 7.3mn t.

Brazilian steel production rose by 5.5pc in May to 3mn t and total South American production was up by 2.1pc year on year at 4mn t.

The association gathers data from 63 countries that produced 98pc of global crude steel last year.
