London, 6 September (Argus) — Saudi Arabia's state-owned petrochemicals company Sabic will shut down one of the two naphtha crackers at its Geleen site in the Netherlands this month for scheduled maintenance.
The Olefins 4 cracker will be offline for six weeks from 15 September.
Geleen is Sabic's largest site in Europe and hosts two crackers with a combined capacity of 1.25mn t/yr of ethylene and 725,000 t/yr of propylene.
The turnaround at Olefins 4 happens every six years. The other cracker - Olefins 3 - will be down for routine maintenance in 2016. The cracker shutdown will also allow Sabic to progress with an ongoing €135 mn ($178 mn) upgrade aimed at boosting the site's energy efficiency, the company said. This project will lead to a 2 pc increase in cracker output, Sabic said but it declined to provide a breakdown of each cracker's existing capacity.
The downstream polyethylene and polypropylene plants will not be affected by the Olefins 4 shutdown.
Geleen produces 940,000 t/yr of polyethylene and 620,000 t/yr of polypropylene.
