New Jersey wind project signs DOE grant

The developers of a 25MW wind project off the coast of New Jersey yesterday signed a $47mn grant from the US Department of Energy.

Fishermen's Energy said the funding supplement will help finalize construction planning and other activities to begin commercial operation by 2016. The project will use five 5MW turbines to be installed off the coast of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

"Our goal here in Atlantic City is to build a commercially operational wind farm that demonstrates job creation and specifically to show that these types of projects create benefits that far exceed their costs," Fishermen's Energy chief executive officer Chris Wissemann said.

The project was one of three offshore wind demonstration that DOE selected in May to receive up to $47mn each in funding. The other two were a five-turbine, 30MW project off Coos Bay, Oregon, to be built by Principle Power, and a two-turbine, 12MW project off Virginia Beach, Virginia, by Dominion Power.

Fishermen's Energy has all federal and state permits needed to begin construction, which is expected to start next year.

The company is still appealing a decision by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to reject its proposal for offshore renewable electricity certificates (ORECs). The board said the project's OREC price of $263/MWh was too high. But Fishermen's Energy said it had proposed a price of a $199/MWh, which would take into account the new federal funding plus other federal support.
