Chevron Phillips Chemical today announced the completion of its 200mn lb/yr ethylene expansion project at its Sweeny complex in Old Ocean, Texas.
With the additional tenth furnace at its Unit 33 ethylene unit, the facility's total capacity stands at 4.3bn lb/yr (1.95mn t/yr). The project began in 2013.
The expansion of the company's Sweeny complex precedes additional projects to take advantage of cheap feedstocks, including the construction of a new 1.5mn t/yr ethane cracker at the company's Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown, Texas, and two 500,000 t/yr polyethylene units near the Sweeny complex. The company broke ground on the ethane cracker in April, and the polyethylene units in June.
