China aims to consolidate its domestic coal mining sector by shutting down more small and illegal mines to cut the number of mining accidents.

China will close down more than 2,000 small coal mines next year, consolidating the coal mining industry to below 10,000 coal mines, said the state administration of work safety's (Saws) secretary Yang Dongliang. The closures will further strengthen continuing production safety efforts and ensure stable and sustainable coal production, he said.

China had earlier sought to close more than 1,700 small coal mines with capacity of 90,000 t/yr or less that rely on poor quality and outdated means of production, which fail to meet minimum safety standards and operate illegally. But only 1,100 mines were shut this year, on to of 1,700 mines last year, according to Saws.

Safer production at China's coal mines saw some improvement this year with the number of accidents and deaths falling by 12pc and 10.6pc respectively from year-earlier levels, with no serious accidents for 20 consecutive months, said Yang.

Saws monitored 50 coal mines in 14 counties during January-November, with the total number of accidents and fatalities dropping by 29.7pc and 36.5pc respectively. It will continue to carry out nationwide inspection tours and spot checks, it said.
