A low density polyethylene unit at LyondellBasell's La Porte, Texas chemical complex was shut down on 27 December after a reactor cycle valve malfunctioned during restart, according to a filing with state environmental regulators.
When the valve did not respond, an interlock briefly vented material to the atmosphere and the unit was immediately shut down to protect equipment and personnel, according to the filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The incident resulted in the release of small amounts of ethylene and propylene. It is unclear when the unit will restart.
