CME to launch Europe and Asia benzene swaps

  • Market: Petrochemicals
  • 23/02/15

Exchange operator CME Group is preparing to launch two petrochemical futures swaps that will be settled against Argus physical prices and will allow downstream consumers to hedge against the significant volatility in their feedstock markets.

Listing of European Benzene cif ARA (Argus) and Benzene fob South Korea (Argus) products will begin on 8 March on the CME Globex electronic platform, with clearing via CME ClearPort. Monthly contracts for 12 consecutive forward months will be offered for both Europe and South Korea, beginning with April in Europe and May for South Korea.

The benzene market is volatile and unpredictable due to the various production methods, numerous downstream uses and regional price variations. A cleared paper market will open hedging options to downstream consumers that can be adversely affected by this volatility, allowing them to lock in forward costs and production margins. Producers and traders will equally be able to hedge positions.
