Flex LNG opts out of early deliveries for newbuilds

Norwegian shipowner Flex LNG has decided not to take early delivery of two newbuild LNG carriers because of weak spot charter prices, the firm said today.

The 174,000m³ Flex Aurora is scheduled for delivery at the end of this quarter, but Flex had the option to bring forward delivery to the middle of the quarter.

And the 174,000m³ Flex Amber is slated for delivery in the middle of the third quarter, with the option to bring forward that delivery to the start of the period.

But Flex has not exercised the early delivery options on either vessel — both of which are being built by South Korea's Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries — because of weak spot charter rates, with neither vessel tied to a long-term charter.

Two-stroke LNG carriers were assessed yesterday at $41,000/d for west of Suez spot fixtures and $38,000/d for east. And ballast hire has been reduced in both basins, with firms receiving only around 50-60pc of these headline rates, Flex said. These returns may be close to or below the owner's costs.

Another of Flex's 2020 newbuilds— the 174,000m³ Flex Artemis — is tied to a long-term charter with Swiss trading firm Gunvor, and is scheduled for delivery at the start of the third quarter. The firm also has three further newbuilds slated for delivery in the second half of this year, none of which are tied to term charters.

But the firm will be unaffected by delays — caused by the outbreak of Covid-19 — to dry docking this year, Flex said. The owner's low average fleet age means that no dry docking is required until 2023.
