Shipping leaders call for decarbonisation by 2050

  • 22/09/21

Shipping industry participants have signed a call for government action to enable the global maritime industry to achieve its 2050 decarbonisation goals.

Over 150 signatories of the Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation cover the whole maritime value chain, including AP Moller-Maersk, tanker owner Euronav, Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Line (Mol), Shell and trading firm Trafigura. They want governments to collaborate with the maritime industry to make the policies and funds necessary for decarbonisation.

The organisations are calling for world leaders to commit to goals including a commitment to shipping decarbonisation by 2050, support for zero-emission shipping projects at scale and policies to make zero-emission shipping the default by 2030. This latter commitment involves market-based measures, following the International Chamber of Shipping's plan for a global carbon levy to accelerate decarbonisation in the shipping industry.

Shipping accounts for around 3pc of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Global Maritime Forum. This comes after the UK government last week called for the shipping industry to reach zero global emissions by 2050.
