Pertamina rolls out 5pc ethanol blended gasoline

Indonesian state-owned oil firm Pertamina has launched gasoline blended with 5pc ethanol (E5) in Jakarta and Surabaya, the country's two largest cities.

The E5 gasoline — Pertamax Green 95 — will initially be sold at five Pertamina retail fuel stations in Jakarta and 10 such stations in Surabaya, the company said on 24 July when the fuel was launched. The ethanol for the E5 gasoline was derived from sugarcane molasses, which was then processed into fuel-grade ethanol.

Pertamina sold E2 gasoline during 2006-2009, but this was scrapped because of high costs in fuel-grade ethanol production and a lack of subsidies. The latest launch comes as Indonesia targets to introduce E15 gasoline across the country by 2031.

Indonesia is expected to import up to 35.6mn kiloliters of ethanol in 2040, according to the Bandung Institute of Technology. Consumption of fuel-grade ethanol has remained at virtually zero since 2010 because of a lack of financial support to run ethanol blending programmes with the mandate never enforced.

Indonesia will enforce a mandate on blending 35pc biodiesel (B35) with transport fuel from 1 August.
