Canadian energy companies ATCO Energy Solutions and Petrogas have secured long-term contracts for four planned salt cavern storage facilities in Alberta.

The new salt caverns are located at the ATCO Heartland Energy Centre near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, and will connect to Petrogas' Fort Saskatchewan truck and rail terminal.

ATCO will operate the caverns, which will be capable of storing 400,000 m³, or 2.5mn bl, of propane, butane and ethylene.

Commercial operations at two of the caverns are expected to begin in second quarter of 2016. The second two caverns will be operation in second quarter 2017. Drilling had already begun in September 2014, when the project was first revealed.

ATCO has also doubled its land holdings by purchasing 160 additional acres at its ATCO Heartland Energy Centre. The additional acreage will allow ATCO to expand its surface facilities and holds the potential for 40 more salt caverns near ATCO facilities.
