Corrects the accredited company to Bunbury Offshore Wind Farm
The Australian federal government today issued a preliminary feasibility licence to Australian private firm Bunbury Offshore Wind Farm for its Bunbury Offshore Wind Project in Western Australia (WA).
The project is not to be confused with the Bunbury Offshore Wind Farm joint venture by Norwegian state-controlled firm Equinor and Australian developer Oceanex Energy.
The project could provide 1.5GW of renewable electricity to WA if developed, minister for climate change and energy Chris Bowen and the assistant minister for climate change and energy Josh Wilson said in a joint statement on 3 June.
A second offshore wind project planned by Bunbury Offshore Wind Farm and a project by Australian private firm Westward Wind were also shortlisted for a preliminary feasibility licence. Both projects are in the southern area of the zone and the applicants will have to resolve the overlap between them, according to the statement.
The decision will contribute to WA's need for 50GW of additional generation capacity by 2042.
Projects that have a feasibility licence will be able to apply for commercial licences and progress to the construction phase if they secure financing.
