A rosin esters facility was damaged after a fire broke out at Pinus Brasil's pine chemicals complex in the city of Buri in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, last week.

The blaze, which destroyed a 1,000m² pine oleoresin processing warehouse on 27 August, completely destroyed the nearby gum rosin derivatives building, sources familiar with the matter said.

A spokesperson for Pinus Brasil said the company's isolated gum turpentine tanks were not affected. Some stocks were also saved, the spokesperson added.

The fire will remove 1,000 t/month of gum rosin derivatives from the market, according to market estimates, and the company will probably seek third party factories to produce rosin esters.

It will take at least one year for the company to rebuild the site, according to a source.

Pinus Brasil is the country's second-largest gum rosin derivatives producer after Grupo Resinas Brasil and a large processor of pine oleoresin, gum rosin and gum turpentine, market participants said.

Pinus Brasil's Buri complex included a gum rosin and gum turpentine plant and a secondary gum rosin esters facility. Pinus Brasil has the capacity to process over 36,000 t/yr of pine oleoresin feedstock, the company said.
