EU to commission study on biofuel bunkers

The EU's European Maritime Safety Agency (Emsa) has issued a tender for a study on safe bunkering with biofuels.

The study will examine bio-methanol, bio Fischer-Tropsch (FT)-diesel, bio-dimethyl ether (DME), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and Fatty acid methyl esters (Fame). It will develop risk assessments and provide procedures and checklists for using the fuels. Study proposal submissions are accepted until 14 July and have to remain valid through 18 July. EMSA estimates the study cost at €200,000 ($217,086).

Biofuels for bunkering have gained traction as low-carbon marine fuel alternatives. Ships traveling in EU territorial waters will have to pay for 40pc of their CO2-equivalent emissions beginning in 2024, 70pc beginning in 2025, and 100pc beginning in 2026. In Rotterdam, biofuel blends demand was at 146,806t the first quarter, 6pc of total bunker demand there. B100, comprised of advanced Fame, was selling at a $228/t premium, or 35pc higher than marine gasoil (MGO) in Rotterdam in May, Argus data showed. B30, a blend of advanced Fame and very low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), was selling at a $138/t premium, or 27pc higher than VLSFO in Rotterdam.
