Global energy and commodity price reporting agency Argus has named Covanta Sustainable Solutions and eastern Class I railroad CSX as the 2016 recipients of its prestigious Win-Win Award.

The Argus Win-Win was awarded today at the North American Rail Shippers Association conference in Arlington, Virginia, which was attended by nearly 250 representatives of the railroad industry.

Launched in 1998 by Argus Rail Business, the annual Win-Win Award is now in its 19th year and recognizes railroads, shippers and organizations that develop innovative partnerships leading to better service, more affordable rates and other mutually beneficial improvements.

This year’s winning project involved the movement of over 1mn short tons of New York City waste to facilities in Chester, Pennsylvania, and Niagara Falls, New York, along a supply chain that spanned rail, truck and marine outlets. Covanta operates waste-to-energy facilities at those CSX-served locations that reduce methane emissions and generate energy to be supplied to the electrical grid, instead of having the waste move to landfills.

"Covanta is honored to be the recipient of the prestigious Argus Win-Win Award,” Covanta’s vice-president and general manager, municipal services, Dan Caraccio, said. “Our partnership with CSX has allowed us to provide exceptionally safe and sustainable municipal solid waste transfer and disposal services to our client, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and ensures that a reliable fuel supply is delivered to our energy-from-waste facilities, which generate clean energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

CSX built upon its experience with other customers of moving waste to landfills and other destinations to help advise Covanta on what was needed to ensure that its proposal to the City of New York would be successful.

“CSX is thrilled to be recognized alongside our partner Covanta for this innovative solution that has improved options for New York City while reducing congestion and emissions. This project is an example of CSX’s commitment to helping customers find creative solutions that maximize the efficiency and environmental benefits of freight rail transportation,” CSX’s marketing director, chemicals and waste, Tiana Draper, said.

The latest recipients of the Win-Win Award were both recognized for establishing a partnership that allows the shipper to increase the volume of its business, and the railroad for being able to efficiently add short-haul, truck competitive volume to its network.

Argus Media executive chairman and publisher Adrian Binks said the recipients of the Argus Win-Win Award demonstrate the very best practices in the industry. “We congratulate Covanta and CSX on this innovative, environmentally-sustainable partnership that allows both parties to achieve results and grow their respective business.”
