French mining and metallurgy company Eramet could expand into lithium (Li) production and recycling to complement its cobalt and manganese battery metal business.

A final decision on investment in the company's lithium project in Argentina is expected in the first half of 2019, the company said in its full-year results, after the completion of a technical and economic assessment. The company expects to begin production in 2021 if the development is approved, with an output capacity of 20,000 t/yr of lithium carbonate. It is considering other sites for acquisitions in lithium and cobalt, as well as nickel salts.

Eramet already operates a subsidiary — Valdi — at its Commentry site in France aimed at recycling batteries, catalysts and metal oxides.

Demand for battery metals is expected to increase from the electric vehicle sector, energy storage technology and data storage. Eramet expects sales of electric vehicles to total over 25mn units/yr by 2025, up from around 3mn units/yr now. This would lead to increased demand for lithium, totalling around 350,000 t/yr in 2025 from around 55,000t/yr now. Demand for cobalt material is also expected to rise to around 90,000t/yr from 20,000t/yr.
